A few months ago I was reading an article on someone’s blog and decided to leave a comment. Doesn’t sound too out of the ordinary right? But what happened next was completely awesome!
Instead of the blog post page simply refreshing after I left my comment, I was taken to a completely different page on the blog, and this page made me smile so big. Let me tell you why.
This page was no ordinary page. This page was thanking me… little old me… for leaving a comment on the blog! Pretty cool right? So I decided to figure out how this blogger had redirected me to this thank you page and implement the same technique on my own blogs. It ended up being easy, and creating the thank you page on my own site was a lot of fun.
I think having a comment thank you page is such a great way to encourage people to keep commenting. Plus, it’s the perfect opportunity to ask people to subscribe. They’re already interested enough in what you wrote to leave a comment, why not strike while the iron is hot and see if you can’t keep in touch for the long run?
Want this blog customization for yourself? I’ve laid out the step-by-step instructions for you below. Plus, you can see it in action by commenting on this post at the end! Note: the thank you page only shows up for the first comment a person makes on the blog. Repeat commenters will not see it.
Blog Customization: How To Redirect After a First Comment
1. Get the plugin
First things first, you’ll need to install the Comment Redirect plugin by Yoast on your WordPress site and make sure it’s activated.
2. Create your thank you page
Add a new page to your site with your thank you message and your subscription widget from your email newsletter provider. Make sure this isn’t a post, but rather a page. I also set my thank you page to no index and make sure it’s not added to my sitemap. This can be done on the advanced tab of the Yoast SEO plugin if you have it.
3. Change plugin settings
Next, you’ll need to go to the settings page for the plugin (Plugins → Comment Redirect) and select the page you just created from the drop down list and click on save.
Any time you set up a new user facing setting, you always want to test it out and make sure it works. Remember that only first time commenters will be redirected to your thank you page, so you might need to log out of whatever commenting system you have a create a new account to test it out.
